Blockbuster IPL 2016 wooed 1.02 billion viewers in India

THE NINTH edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) registered a cumulative reach of 361 million viewers, over the 60 matches played, which included two qualifiers, one eliminator and the final. 

According to the data released by Broadcast Audience Research Council of India (BARC), the big-final between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad clocked 44.68 million impressions, 168% more than the event average. And as per Sony, about 121 million people tuned in to see the finals.

The total viewership of the cash-rich tournament stood at 1.02 billion impressions, summed across five channels over the period of seven weeks. This has been one of the most viewed events with 54 per cent of India’s total television audience remaining glued to it on pay television. The top performing markets for IPL 2016 were Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Maharashtra/Goa, Gujarat, and Karnataka.
