Ganguly asks selectors whether they see Dhoni as a captain for 2019 WC

FORMER INDIA CAPTAIN SOURAV GANGULY has raised doubts over Dhoni’s future as India captain. After India crashed out in the semis of the recently concluded WT20, misery has followed the India skipper. With Rising Pune Supergiants languishing at the seventh position on the points table, more questions about Dhoni's leadership have been raised.

Talking to India Today, Ganguly said the national selectors need to plan keeping WC 2019 in mind and ask themselves if they see Dhoni’s future as India captain.

"Every cricket team in the world plans their future. But my question to the selectors is three-four years down the line, do they see MS Dhoni as captain of India?"

The Cricket Association of Bengal president acknowledged Dhoni’s successful tenure of 9 years as a captain however he added that 13 years as a captain is a long period.

“Dhoni has been captain for nine years, which is a long period. Does he have it in him to go for another four years? Do the selectors think he has got in him to go another four years and be captain of a country for 13 years and take them to the 2019 World Cup? I am not so sure. That's the decision selectors will have to make."

The 43-year-old added praise for the India Test captain Virat Kohli and hinted that he should be considered for the limited-overs captaincy role.

"Virat Kohli is getting better every time. He is probably the best in the world in terms of consistency. His mental energy, tenacity is unreal. His attitude on the field is superb. His record as Test captain has been good. Decision on appointing Kohli as captain should go in terms of where MS goes from here. There's no disregard to him, he's been one of the greatest captains of the country."
