ICC World Cup: golden ticket for Amitabh Bachchan, black market for the regular fans

THE ICC CRICKET WORLD CUP has an entirely predictable black market problem.

The tickets to India's matches have sold out like hot cakes and fans seeking to get hold of them ran into troubles like a website crash, server overloads and long virtual queues stretching to ours.

.Now, we can add a new pain to the list: the aftermarket; which is commonly referred to as the black market. It appears a high number of people who bought tickets didn't intend to attend matches at all. Instead they are immediately trying to sell them online for a hefty profit.

The asking price for these tickets are in lakhs. The regular tickets are selling on aftermarket ticket apps like Viagogo for 4-5 lakhs while premium tickets are reportedly going for over 50 lakhs.

Re-selling tickets for profit is against the rules. It's even treated as a financial crime in many parts of the world. However, neither BCCI nor the Indian law enforcement have taken any step to curb this epidemic that's gripping the World Cup.

Instead, promotional activities like delivering a 'golden ticket' to Amitabh Bachchan are taking precedence.

As usual, while superstars get special treatment, cricket-loving fans who make the sport what it is are left on their own navigating an impossible situation where they are exploited by crooks at every turn just to get hold of a match ticket.
