LISTEN: Does Ben Stokes posses 'The Dhoni Spirit'? Ricky Ponting thinks so

FORMER AUSTRALIA CAPTAIN Ricky Ponting heaped praise on Ben Stokes, the current England skipper, with one of the best possible comparisons.

Speaking on the ICC Review podcast, Ponting was talking about the incredible century Stokes scored during England's attempt to chase down a massive total against Australia in the second Ashes 2023 test. Although England lost, the Stokes knock is being discussed worldwide as one of the best of the year.

Ponting said that the knock reminded him of none other than MS Dhoni, who was famous for the major roles he played with the bat while chasing down totals,

"I think any international player is under pressure anytime they walk out to play, but Ben batting in the middle order or later order like he does, probably finds himself in more match-winning opportunity situations than some others might... the first one that comes to mind is maybe someone like a Dhoni, who's there at the end in a lot of T20 games, and finishing games, whereas Ben's doing it at the end of Test matches, and there's not, probably not many, many players through the history of the game that have found themselves in that sort of role and are there at the end winning games, and especially as a captain.”

The presence of players like Stokes is definitely one of the reasons why the ongoing Ashes series is being called one of the best in decades.
