Saina Nehwal not among four elected athlete members for IOC Athletics Commission

INDIAN WOMEN'S SINGLES SHUTTLER Saina Nehwal was not among the four athlete members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletics Commission as she finished sixth in the voting.

All the athletes participating in the 2016 Rio Olympics were allowed to cast their votes. Saina received a total of 1233 votes as she was one of the top 23 sportspersons across the world nominated for this post.

Once the IOC Session approves, the four elected athletes will be part of it for an eight-year term of office.

The four elected sportspersons are fencer Britta Heidemann of Germany with 1,603 votes; South Korean table-tennis player Seung-Min Ryu with 1,544; Hungarian former swimmer Daniel Gyurta of Hungary with 1,469 and finally Russian pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva with 1,365.

IOC President Thomas Bach said, 

"The athletes are at the heart of the Olympic Games. Their voice is very important in the IOC. My congratulations goes to the newly elected members of the IOC Athletes' Commission. We are looking forward to working closely with them to further advance the Olympic Movement," to PTI.
