Wild card Ramkumar suffers first round defeat at the ATP 250 Marseille Open

WORLD NO.212 Ramkumar Ramanathan went down to World no. 175 Mischa Zverev 2-6, 5-7 in the opening round of the ATP 250 Marseille Open in France today.

The Indian who was given a wild card entry into the tournament started off on a positive note after breaking the Russian in the second game of the first set. However, Ramkumar couldn’t capitalize on the lead and was broken a few times in the set to squander the advantage.

In the second set, the Chennai lad showed fight and hung to his serve. Just when it appeared that the set would be decided by a tie-break the qualifier broke Ramkumar’s serve to win the set and match in an hour and 27 minutes.

The 21-year-old struggled with his serve and could only manage to get 55% of his first serve in. Furthermore, he even double faulted on five occasions. On the other hand, Zverev converted 40% of his break point opportunities.
