Clinical Ramanathan hammers Gimeno-Traver to move into round 2 of Chennai Open

INDIA’S RAMKUMAR RAMANATHAN came up with an emphatic performance to dismiss the challenge of Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-2, 6-0 in the opening round of the ATP Chennai Open today.

The World no. 248 came into the match with a positive attitude and went for his shots from the very first game. While, the Spaniard continued committing a series of unforced errors, the local boy came up with big time tennis to wrap up the first set without much trouble.

In the second set, a similar trend followed as the 21-year-old stuck to his big serving and also produced some stunning winners from the baseline to win the crucial points. In the end, Ramanathan breezed through the second set and bageled his opponent to wrap up the match in exactly one hour.

Ramanathan won a high percentage (83) on his first serve and also managed to convert 50% of the break points. Ramanathan is now the only Indian left in the singles main draw and will next face the big serving South African Kevin Anderson in the second round encounter.
