Saina loses 'player of the year' award to Carolina Marin

WORLD NO. 2 AND LEADING WOMEN'S SINGLES SHUTTLER Saina Nehwal was nominated for the Badminton World Federation (BWF) 'Player of the Year' award but World No. 1 Carolina Marin of Spain edged the Indian to win the award.

Performance wise, Marin has always bettered Saina and bagged more points. The Spaniard has won six titles till now in 2015 which includes All England Championship, Malaysia Open, Australia Open, World Championships, French Open and Hong Kong Open.

Saina bagged the no. 1 title for a brief period early this year but Marin replaced the Indian at the top.

The awards were announced and presented by the President of BWF Poul-Erik Høyer on Monday night at the Players' Reception and Gala Dinner for the Dubai World Superseries Finals 2015.

The other awards were as follows, China's Chen Long bagged the 'Player of the year' award in the men's category. Korea's wheelchair player, Lee Sam Seop, bagged the inaugural Male Para-Badminton Player of the Year award while Norway's Helle Sofie Sagoy won the women's equivalent.

Young Chinese talent, Zheng Siwei, copped the Most Promising Player of the Year honour which was collected by his coach and two-time Olympic gold medallist, Zhang Jun.
