Global Chess League: Mumba Masters beat Triveni Continengal Kings in 8-7 thriller

upGrad Mumba Masters registered the first win in Global Chess League (GCL) history against Triveni Continental Kings late on Thursday in Dubai.

upGrad Mumba Masters defeated the Continental Kings 8:7 in a thrilling encounter.

Having lost the toss and playing with Black pieces, upGrad Mumba Masters had their icon player, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (France) on the opening board against Levon Aronian, the American star playing for the Kings. Both settled for a draw and shared a point each.

However, it was on the second board that Alexander Grischuk (Russia) showcased his heroics with late decisive move to pull off a victory and the crucial 4 (one point bonus for winning with black) points against Yu Yangyi.

The Indian women chess duo of Harika Dronavalli and Koneru Hampy pulled of two draws and two crucial points for the team followed by Javokhir Sindarov (Uzbekistan) also pulling off a draw on the last board for the Mumbai squad to ensure a thrilling one-point victory (8:7) over the Triveni Continental Kings in the very first tie at the GCL.

upGrad Mumba Masters suffered only one defeat in the process when Vidit Gujrathi lost to Wei Yi.

The Masters will face Balan Alaskan Knights on Friday.
