India has a long association with the Paralympic movement. The country made its debut at the 1968 Summer Paralympics at Tel Aviv in Israel. Just four years later, Murlikant Petkar became the first-ever Indian to win a Paralympic gold. In the 49-odd years since India’s Paralympic debut, its differently-abled athletes have come a long way – with a four-medal haul at the 2016 Rio Paralympics being the country’s best-ever showing.
