UFC Hamburg Results: Barnett gets better of Arlovski, Gustafsson gets solid win

UFC made its way into Hamburg last night  and had two legendary former UFC champions headlining the card while elite Light Heavyweights rounded up a good card that also saw a german military hero pick up a win in the opening fight of the main card.

Nick Hein eked out a win in a closely fought battle with Tae Hyun Bang, which was as close as any fight could be. Following that fight, Ryan Bader took on fellow wrestler Ilir Latifi in what was an important fight in the Light Heavyweight division. After being nearly finished in the first by a Latifi 'Sledgehammer' shot, Bader came back to win by spectacular fashion with a knee on a charging Latifi that sent the Swede back crashing into the mat and a confident Bader walking off a la Mark Hunt.

In the co-main event, Alexander 'The Mauler' Gustaffson made a triumphant return as he completely outclassed Jan Blachowicz. After weathering the storm from the powerful Polish fighter in the first round, Gustaffson found repeated success in taking Blachowicz down at will and landing big shots from within the guard of Jan. The effort earned him a unanimous decision and his first win in over two years.

The main event between Josh Barnett and Andrei Arlovski started off with fireworks as both men got dropped by the other in the first 25 seconds of the fight. However, both recovered and while Barnett was successful in getting the fight against the cage multiple times, he wasn't able to do a ton of damage when there. However, in the second round after reversing a takedown attempt, Barnett landed on top of Arlovski and was within moments of finishing the fight when the clock ran out.

The third saw both men end up against the cage again, but during the break Barnett caught a thumb to his eye, which caused him to turn away expecting the referee to stop it. However, the referee didn't see it and instead Barnett ate a right to his face but recovered enough to grab a hold of Arlovski's left arm and pull him to the ground. After going for a Kimura/Double wrist-lock, Barnett sunk in a rear naked choke getting a quick tap out of the Belarusian, who lost by submission for the first time in his lengthy career.
