With 30 minutes of Europa League action, Gurpreet achieves the unprecedented feat

INDIA GOALKEEPER Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, who plays for Stabaek FC, added his name to the record books as he started in goal for the Norwegian side in the first round of Europa League qualification game against Connay’s Quay FC.

The custodian became the first Indian ever to play in a premier European competition. However Sandhu’s Europa debut was cut short due to a hand injury. The former East Bengal goalkeeper had to be replaced with Sayouba Mande, Stabaek’s domestic league first choice keeper, in the 30th minute. But during the short stint on goal, Gurpreet caught eyeballs when he pulled a fine save to deny Michael Wilde an opportunity to put his team ahead.

The match resulted in a goalless draw with the second leg scheduled to be held on July 7. The star keeper will be hoping to make a speedy recovery to feature in the next leg as the extent of his injury is not known yet.

Before Sandhu, the likes of Mohammed Salim, Bhaichung Bhutia, Sunil Chhetri and Subrata Paul had all joined European sides, but none of them were fortunate enough to receive playing time in any of the continental fixtures.

A month ago, the 24-year-old had created history by becoming the first Indian footballer to start a European top division match after he made a debut for Stabaek FC. Gurpreet kept a clean sheet as the Norwegian side overcame IK Start 5-0. Back in April, he also became the first Indian to captain a European side, after leading the reserves team against FC Senja.

Meanwhile, as the Punjab-lad made his country proud, this is how the twitteratis reacted to his unprecedented feat:
