HIGHLIGHTS: Mohun Bagan off to winning start in CFL 2023

MOHUN BAGAN STARTED their Calcutta Football League campaign with a 3-1 win today, marking a beginning of their 2023-24 season.

The 134 year old club, which has won the CFL dozens of times, is fielding a youth-focused team in the state league this season, to groom talent for their first team.

Taking on renowned youth club Pathachakra FC in their first Group A match, the Mariners pulled ahead early at Naihati Stadium when Sumit Rathi found the net.

Soon after, Ningombam Engson Singh doubled the lead for Bagan. After this, Pathachakra consolidated their defence and until late in the game, no further breakthrough happened.

Mohun Bagan finally extended their lead to 3-0 when Loitongbam Taison Singh scored in added time. However, a more aggressive Pathachakra got one back on them just before end of play, with Surajit Ghosh scoring the lone goal for them.

The young Mariners will next face a bigger challenge when they take on Tollygunge Agragami on 12th July.
