Mohun Bagan's foundation year '1889' is finally re-included in its football team logo

THE FOUNDATION YEAR of Mohun Bagan is back in its football team's logo, putting an end to a 3 year controversy.

The decision was reportedly taken personally by Dr Sanjiv Goenka, the majority shareholder of the team, to honour the wishes of the Mohun Bagan fans who have been demanding that their club's identity and history be protected.

The whole issue started when KGSPL - the football consortium led by Dr Goenka - shut down their former team ATK FC and invested in the football division of Mohun Bagan. They used the brand name 'ATK Mohun Bagan' for the team and called it a "merger of two clubs" which was not the case. This led to Mohun Bagan fans taking to the streets and the stadium galleries to stage protests and eventually boycotted the team.

On 18th March, after the team won the ISL playoffs, Dr Goenka announced that they would be dropping the 'ATK' prefix and changing the team's name to 'Mohun Bagan Super Giant.' This in effect finally reflected the true identity of the team in the name; i.e. the Mohun Bagan football team operated by its majority shareholders RPSG.

Now, the inclusion of Mohun Bagan's foundation year in the logo has put to rest whatever little doubt was left about its identity.

The logo also incorporates the logo of RPSG Ventures; although the visual focus on the classic Mohun Bagan emblem remains intact.

Fans around the world who were protesting and boycotting this team just months ago unanimously welcomed the decision and thanked the club management, along with Dr Goenka, for the decision to abide by Mohun Bagan's identity.

Mohun Bagan, the oldest active top division club in India, are the only ISL team to have their foundation year included in the logo.
