Indian football team donates Rs 20 lakhs to the victims of Balasore train collision tragedy

THE INDIAN NATIONAL TEAM have donated a large sum of their prize money for winning the Intercontinental Cup to the victims of the train tragedy that happened earlier this month in Odisha.

After the Blue Tigers beat Lebanon 2-0 to win the Intercontinental Cup for the second time, the Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced a cash prize of Rs 1 crore to the team.

Soon afterwards in the dressing room, the team decided to donate Rs 20 lakhs to the victims and the families of the Balasore train crash.

This is not the first time the Indian team has donated money to charity efforts and other causes. In 2019, they donated Rs 50,000 - collected internally from various players due to disciplinary breaches like turning up late, carrying mobile phones during training etc - to the Indian Blind Football Federation and in 2020 the team donated an undisclosed sum to the PM Cares Fund to aid the battle against COVID-19; with Sunil Chhetri urging the public to donate more to the pandemic prevention efforts.

When Indian captain Sunil Chhetri appeared on the quiz show 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' along with boxing world champion Mary Kom, they donated their winnings of Rs 12.5 lakhs to the Mary Kom Regional Boxing Foundation and The Voice of Stray Dogs.
