Although his tenure as the national team head coach got off to a rocky start with India not doing well in the World Cup Qualifiers and failing to win a single match in Intercontinental Cup 2019, he's been steady on his approach of adopting a more creative, passing-heavy style of play.
Over time, India's performance steadied as they won the SAFF Championship 2021 qualified for the Asian Cup. This year, however, they have been on top form; winning six matches straight without conceding a goal and achieving several historic milestones in the process.
Last night's victory over Lebanon, a top-100 team, was the cherry on the cake and it produced one of the best team-effort goals scored by India in years; with Nikhil Poojary's backheel leading to Lallianzuala Chhangte's nutmeg pass to Sunil Chhetri who produced an exquisive first-touch finish.
While the fans are buzzing about the on-field performance they witnessed last night, it cannot be denied that Igor Stimac's efforts behind the scene have been the reason this was made possible.
India have the chance to achieve many more milestones this year as they prepare for a busy schedule with several tournaments and World Cup Qualifiers, culminating in the Asian Cup early next year.
