Bastab Roy

After missing out in winning a national trophy in 14 years, East Bengal had themselves to blame for a series of disorderly decisions toward the end of the season. Pouncing on Aizawl’s I-League winning coach of 2016-17, East Bengal may have thought to have grabbed the trophy-winning formula. When the title started to slip out reach after losing the lead in the points table, the Red and Golds made a desperate attempt by getting Subhash Bhowmick on board. While Jamil and Bhowmick sure did not get along and the friction was clear in the team’s performance on field. Jamil was eventually sacked at the end of the season.

Bhowmick continued as Technical Director of the team as he does not hold an AFC ‘A’ licence, a mandate for being the head coach of the team. For East Bengal, Bhowmick seems to be their best shot at the title as he had being the coach when they last won the title. Getting a coach of Jamil’s calibre may cause a repeat of the friction to result therefore EB may be looking for a rather not a high-profile candidate to fill up the position of head coach. Talks seem to be on to bring Bastab Roy at the club. Bastab has been working as an assistant coach at ATK from 2015 and may just be the one under the guidance of Bhomick to lead the club.
