Mizoram Football Association launch state-wide Futsal league

THE MIZORAM FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION TODAY launched the biggest state-wide futsal league in India.

A total of 25 teams representing various localities of Aizawl and other areas are taking part in the playoff stage which kicked off today at the Rajiv Gandhi Football Stadium, Aizawl.

Each team will play all the other teams in its pool in a single leg round robin format. Top eight teams from each pool will qualify for the MFA Futsal League proper. The 16 team league will kick off in January.

A moment from the first playoff match

While the playoff stage is being held at the football arena with the main pitch divided into four futsal pitches for simultaneous matches, the main league will be held in an indoor stadium. There are plans to telecast the league live on one of the local cable TV networks.

While other state associations have held futsal tournaments of their own in the past, in terms of participation, length and fanfare the MFA Futsal League is likely to dwarf all other local tournaments. If the first edition proves to be a success, teams from Mizoram will likely play a major role in the national futsal league championship that AIFF and IMG-Reliance plan to launch in the near future.
