Mohun Bagan fans brave foul weather to welcome Fed Cup champion squad
THE MOHUN BAGAN TEAM received a hero's welcome at the Kolkata airport today where hundreds of fans welcomed them on their return to Kolkata with the Federation Cup trophy.
The Mariners won the biggest cup tournament in India on Saturday at Guwahati, beating Aizawl FC 5-0 in the final. Today they returned to their home city, where fans greeted them with thunderous chants and escorted the team bus to the club premises in the Maidan.
Heavy rains and thunderstorm had been raging in Kolkata throughout the day, and the team reached the city on a weekday afternoon. But it did not stop their fans from turning out in numbers. More than a hundred bikes braved the rough weather to give the team bus and the Federation Cup a guard of honour from the airport to the club.
At the club lawn supporters gathered and chanted on as players, coach Sanjoy Sen and all the staff were felicitated by club officials. The historic trophy was put on display for the fans to witness from up close. Being the 14th Fed Cup title for Mohun Bagan, this win is extra special as it furthers Bagan's stature as the most successful club in India's biggest cup tournament.
