It's the Stags again! Mohun Bagan to face a familiar foe in AFC Cup pre-quarter final

MOHUN BAGAN will face a familiar old opponent in Tampines Rovers at the AFC Cup pre-quarter finals on 24th May.

Today in their last group stage match, Rovers, known as 'The Mighty Stags' to their supporters, defeated Selangor 1-0 at home, which ensured that they finished second in Group E, with 10 points from their 6 matches.

This set them up for another visit to India this season to face the Mariners in the single-leg knockout encounter.

Their previous match against Mohun Bagan happened in January. It was an AFC Champions League Preliminary Round-1 game. That night, Salt Lake Stadium saw the Mariners make history by becoming the first Indian club to win an ACL match since the modern format was introduced in the highest club competition in Asian football. Bagan won that game 3-1, with Jeje Lalpekhlua, Cornell Glen and Katsumi Yusa getting on the scoresheet, while Sony Norde putting in a stellar shift for the Green and Maroons.

But that was before the domestic season had begun in Singapore, and the Stags will come into the game riding on some good momentum, and with stakes much higher.

The match will take place in Guwahati, which has been the designated home ground for Mohun Bagan in the AFC Cup group stage. It will take place just 3 days after the Federation Cup final takes place at the same venue; a mega event that has a high likelihood of featuring the Mariners.
