Ashley Westwood made racially abusive comments, says East Bengal team doctor

BENGALURU FC head coach Ashley Westwood has been accused of making racist comments by East Bengal team doctor Shambo Samrat Samajdar.

In a report published in Bengali tabloid Ebela Samrat was quoted saying,

"He was using unspeakable language to insult Indians throughout the game. It didn't stop even after Bengaluru FC won the match."

It's a fact that Ashley Westwood was involved in heated verbal exchanges with the East Bengal reserve bench and coaching staff throughout the match. The contest on the pitch was a robust, physical one and the tension often spilled over to the sidelines.

In the post-match press conference, East Bengal coach Biswajit Bhattacharya, too, accused the Bengaluru FC coach of "sledging" the home team's reserve bench. But he didn't mention anything about possible racist abuse from the Bengaluru FC coach.

East Bengal have reported informed the All India Football Federation about the incident. It is yet unclear how the report of the match commissioner reflects on this incident but it is likely to be key in the disciplinary process that will follow it.

If found guilty, Ashley Westwood can receive a fine and even a suspension sentence as per the rules set by FIFA.
