THE PHILIPPINE MAVERICKS have constructed a line-up of big servers and powerful hitters of a tennis ball. Mavericks’ campaign will be led by none other than Serena Williams in the second season of the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL).
While the Mavericks have an ace up their sleeve in Serena in the women’s section and the backup of big serving, Sabine Lisicki, the men’s singles remains an area of concern. Milos Raonic is an accomplished player and has the ability to beat any top player on his day, but his inconsistency and lack of match practice might hurt the Philippine team. His team mate, Richard Gasquet too has the tendency to choke under pressure.
That said, the Philippine franchise will be delighted to have the services of Mark Philippoussis in the legends category and the Aussie will thrive on his experience of playing in such innovative leagues.
In the men's and mixed doubles too, the Mavericks are nicely poised with Roger Vasselin, Treat Huey and Jarmila Gajdsova. Meanwhile, the likes of Serena and Lisicki too can make their presence felt in the mixed doubles category.
