Japan Warriors: Lack of superstars might hamper progress; bank on Kei, Maria & workhorses

THE JAPAN WARRIORS will be making their debut in the upcoming International Premier Tennis League (IPTL). The Japan franchise might not have a Djokovic, Nadal or Federer in their ranks, but have roped in home boy, Kei Nishikori, to shoulder the responsibility in the men’s singles.

The newcomers have also absorbed the stunning Russian Maria Sharapova in the ladies singles section. In the men’s and mixed doubles, the legendary Leander Paes will exude his mastery and try to bring glory for the Japanese team, while another accomplished doubles player in Daniela Hantuchova will partner Paes in the mixed doubles.

Meanwhile, former Australian Open and US Open champion Marat Safin will feature in the legends category. Home favourite and upcoming star Kurumi Nara and veteran ATP player, Philip Kohlschreiber too, will represent Japan going ahead.

The Warriors don’t have a current Grand Slam champion in the men’s category but Nishikori has all the credentials to give the very best players a run for their money. As far as the women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles is concerned, Japan seem to have covered all their bases and look a potent unit. That said, most players will be playing their first IPTL and the inexperience might delay Japan's progress initially.

Here's a quick look at the debutants' profile.
