Sania on gender disparity, and right to ask about what happens in her bedroom

INDIA'S TENNIS STAR Sania Mirza likes to be in the news and doesn’t refrain from vocally, expressing her views in public. The current World no.1, women’s doubles player was one of the six Indian women to feature in the recent, BBC’s 100 women of 2015, a list compiled by the media conglomerate of the ‘aspirational women’ across the world. Since then, Mirza has been doing quite a few interviews and has continued to speak her mind.

For long in the tennis world, there has been an obvious disparity between the men and the women. Various tennis governing bodies and federations have often neglected several grievances by the ladies and Mirza firmly believes that it’s still a man’s world.

As reported by the BBC, the 29 year old said,

“We live in a man’s world . A lot of people might come out and say we don’t but the fact of the matter is that sometime when you are a woman you have to fight a lot harder for things. It has got nothing to do with this side of the world or India, it has got to do with the world."

“It’s only in recent past that we have had equal prize money for both men and women. So it doesn’t just happen in India, like people like to believe,”

Despite achieving incredible success on the tennis court and bring glory to her country, Mirza feels she continues to be hounded with the question, "When are you going to have children?"

“I feel it’s extremely disrespectful to ask someone when they are having a child. Just because I am a public figure, it doesn’t give anyone a right to ask me what happens in my bedroom. I really don’t think so,”
