Bopanna not to partner Paes, happy with Mergea, eyes 2016 Rio Games qualification

INDIA'S ROHAN BOPANNA and Romania’s Florin Mergea would be pretty happy with the way they finished the 2015 season. The Indo-Romanian pair might not have captured any Grand Slam for the year, but successfully qualified for the World Tour Finals in London. Bopanna/Mergea also beat tops seeds and the legendary Bryan brothers in the group stages and finished as the finalists in London.

So, it doesn’t come as a surprise when the Indian says he will continue to team up with the Romanian at the start of the 2016 season. Looking ahead into the Rio Olympics next year, it is imperative that Bopanna maintains his top-10 ranking. As per the Olympic rules, all players in the doubles Top 10 get automatic entry into the doubles event.

Earlier, there were some rumors of Bopanna partnering, compatriot and legendary Leander Paes for the Rio games; however the 35-year-old put an end to all the speculation and theories.

As reported by Mumbai Mirror,

"I did that last time (plan for Olympics early) and it didn't work out. This time I don't want to make the same mistake. Currently, Leander and I have the best chance to play the Olympics but before that I have to ensure that I maintain a good ranking and qualify for Rio. With Mergea, I will be beginning the year in a settled partnership and that is very important for me as we target more glory as a pair".
