Bopanna/Mergea first team to qualify for the semis of ATP World Tour Finals
THE INDO-ROMANIAN pair of Rohan Bopanna and Florin Mergea have qualified for the semi-finals of the World Tour Finals in London.
The Eighth seeds might have qualified last for the year ending championships, but after their straight sets win 6-3, 7-6(5) over fourth seeds Jamie Murray and John Peers today, Bopanna/Mergea became the first doubles team to secure a place in the knock-out stages.
With two wins in as many matches, Bopanna/Mergea also top the table in the Ashe/Smith group.
An early break in the first set was enough for Bopanna/Mergea as the pair held their own serve to nail the first set. In the second set, both teams lost their serves a few times, owing to which the set went into a tie-break. In the breaker, the Indian-Romanian team won five of last six points for their 31st match win of the season.
Bopanna/Mergea will next face Italians, Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolleli in their final round-robin match.
