CFL 2023 HIGHLIGHTS: Suhail & Engson's braces propel Mohun Bagan to the top

MOHUN BAGAN REACHED the top of the CFL Premier Division Group A points table beating Calcutta FC by a 4-1 margin.

The Mariners, who are fielding their development team in Calcutta Football League, are undefeated in their campaign so far. And much of their 13 points from 5 matches have been bagged courtesy Suhail Ahmed Bhat who is fast emerging as a fan favourite.

Suhail got the breakthrough for Bagan about half an hour into the game, when he got hold of the ball near the edge of the box, misdirected a defender with his quick movement, created space for himself to shoot through the middle of three defenders trying to close him off, and found the net.

Not long afterwards, Akash Mondal found the equalizer for CFC. But just before half time, Suhail once again scored and restored Mohun Bagan's lead.

In the second half, Ningomba Engson Singh found the net for Bagan twice, creating a comfortable three goal cushion to finish with at Barrackpore Stadium.

The high margin of victory helped the Mariners overtake Diamound Harbour FC, who are also on 13 points from 5 matches, by goal difference to lay claim on the top position.

A clash between these two teams seems to be building up; in what could turn out to be the battle that defines the fate of this group.
