Mohun Bagan team bus meets with accident, gets mobbed by locals, players unharmed

THE MOHUN BAGAN TEAM BUS was attacked by a mob of locals on their way back from the stadium following a road accident, news has emerged.

None of the players aboard has come to any harm, TFG has learned.

After registering a 4-0 victory against DSK Shivajians, the Mariners were on their way back to the team hotel when a scooter knocked into the team bus. The two-wheeler driver was injured, although at this point it's unclear how serious his injuries are.

An angry group of localites blamed the bus driver for the accident and mobbed the team bus. The Mohun Bagan team manager, trying to control the situation, tried to talk to the people but he was mistreated and pushed around.

The crowd however calmed down when the players identified themselves. They let the bus pass and the players safely reached the team hotel.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that there was no police present at the spot, which is curious because participating teams in a high profile tournament like the Federation Cup are usually expected to have police escort.

A source from within the team confirmed to TFG that not having police protection is a breach of the norms and they have written a formal complaint to AIFF narrating the whole incident, explaining how the players were left unprotected in front of a mob due to lack of security arrangements on the the tournament organizers' part.

Road accidents has become a recurring theme in Indian football over the past couple of weeks. This comes hot in the heels of Aizawl FC's team bus having a road accident on their way to the airport to travel to Cuttack. Days later Mohun Bagan defender Raju Gaikwad crashed his car in Kolkata. Fortunately none of these accidents caused serious injury to any player.

We will bring you more on the story as we get further information.
