Materazzi says CFC lacked hunger to win; Zambrotta: DDFC need to learn to close the match

DELHI'S WINNING START to ISL 3 would go a long way to boost the team's morale for the upcoming games. Speaking in the post match press conference Zambrotta said,

“The win has made me happy but we also have to think that we’ve just started the league and from tomorrow we have to think about the future match. I’m happy for tonight but tomorrow we start a new adventure,”

The Dynamos coach attributed the good show to their pre season foreign matches form.

“We had a good pre-season for a month and then we came back to Delhi and we gelled well as a team. Everything has come together. We do our attacking runs together and hence we got the goals today. I think it all came together today"

Materazzi admitted straight away that Delhi were clearly the better side of the evening. He was of the view that Chennaiyin didn't want the ball enough to get the three points. Italian Materazzi promised to come back stronger and to display the mettle of the defending champs.

“We didn’t play well. I want to congratulate Delhi because they deserved to win. And now it’s my responsibility at least for the next game to show them that we are going to fight. It’s also the responsibilities of the players but mostly mine. And we’ll show that we can fight back"

“It was a lack of hunger, you could see that because we were losing 3-1, and still Delhi had more ball possession, for 3-4 minutes" he continued

Dynamos surrendered their lead to Dudu's equalizer but Marcelinho restored the lead once again to calm their nerves going into the break leading 2-1. Second half saw a slow paced game by both teams and signalled DDFC going into defensive mode. To this Zambrotta shared,

"The first 50 minutes of the match was harder for us because they were tactically stronger for us. After half-time we played like we know and fortunately we’ve done a good job. Also, it’s very important we have to learn to close the match before and not to wait for the third goal. We have to learn to close the match.”

The Italian Materazzi said the scoreline could have been much worse as he thought Chennaiyin made one mistake too many for his liking.

"So four days ago we were a good team in my point of view, but now we couldn’t have been worse than this.
Definitely there was lack of pace and since the quality of the league has increased, every mistake you make you’ll have to pay for it. We actually did six, seven, eight pretty bad mistakes so, actually we were lucky that the score was only 3-1.”

In yesterday's game wing back Mohanraj did not live upto the standards he usually does, commenting on him the Chennaiyin Coach did not believe in singling out an individual performance for the team's loss said,

"Maybe Mohanraj needs more time to integrate into the team, but I think we can’t blame a single player because when we win, we win together, when we lose, we lose together"

Dynamos defender Anas Edathodika had to be replaced following an injury complaint early in second half. Zambrotta on the status of Anas's news commented,

“Anas is with the doctor at the moment. He told me that he doesn’t know yet if it’s a massive problem or something minor. Wish Anas all the best but we have to wait till tomorrow for the updates from the medical team"

Summing up his view of the game Materazzi said,

“Yes, the whole defence was suffering as the whole team was stretched playing together. I think the first 10 minutes, we played very good, and then we had a 1-1 score-line. We had to be more intelligent, we had to show some hunger, and then they scored another goal. At that moment it was not good for us, it became 2-1 and from there on it all went down. So I want to congratulate Delhi again for the win and also because of many mistakes from our side,”
