Ramanathan books his place in round two of Wimbledon singles qualifiers

INDIA’S RAMKUMAR RAMANATHAN has successfully beaten Marek Michalicka 7-5, 6-7(2), 6-4 in round one of the Wimbledon qualifiers today.

World no. 231 Ramanathan went through the grind for more than two hours to move to the next round. After winning the first set at the end by breaking his opponent, the Chennai lad lost a one-sided tie-breaker in the second.

Both men served decently and didn’t face too many break points either. In the end, another decisive break in the decider gave Ramkumar the edge to stay ahead at SW19.

Ramkumar will play his second round qualifier against the hard-hitting German Daniel Brands.

Meanwhile, India's Saketh Myneni unfortunately, crashed out after losing to T Lamasine 4-6, 6-7, 1-6. The Hyderabadi lad was serving for the match for a place in the next round, but couldn't press home the advantage.

With Myneni's exit, India has only Ramkumar left in the singles qualifying draw.
