Tender for one new IPL team issued by BCCI; team valid for only two seasons

THE BCCI HAS issued a tender notice for the right to operate one of the two proposed new teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for two seasons -- 2016 and 2017.

The tender notice clearly states that these two new teams will form part of the IPL only during the next two seasons and not thereafter.

The rights on offer include the right to operate and manage one of the two teams, to exploit team rights, to stage its home league matches at the stadium which shall be provided to each new franchise by the BCCI, the tender notice, issued in The Times of India, states.

Earlier this year, the BCCI went ahead with the recommendations of the Supreme Court-appointed Justice Lodha Committee that ordered a two-year suspension for tainted franchises Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. Both CSK and RR were involved in corruption and fixing scandals, which led to a lifetime ban on Gurunath Meiyappan from the CSK camp and RR co-founder Raj Kundra.

The board then invited bids for two new teams to replace CSK and RR for a period of two years, following which they will have to exit the Indian Premier League. However, the players from both franchises will be put into a draft system, and an auction will be conducted for them.
