Play-by-Play: Fairytale comeback by CCFC, East Bengal succumb to league rookies
JUST WHEN IT appeared that East Bengal were about to re-assert themselves in the I-League title race, they went down to Chennai City 2-1 in a shock loss at a 14th round match.
East Bengal started well and seemed to have a good deal of control over the match. They kept up good pressure and while Chennai did create some chances, the visitors clearly had more effective opportunities. They took the lead towards the end of the first half through a goal by Plaza and it seemed the game was theirs at half-time.
But Chennai City pulled off a nearly miraculous comeback in the second period. After Nandhakumar scored almost an hour into the game against the run of play, the whole game changed. East Bengal created multiple chances but missed. But towards the end of the game, desperate for a win, the visitors put their seasoned defender Bukenya up as an attacker. This created a space that allowed an injury time counter by Raegan and Charles to allow Nandhakumar to hammer home a goal in injury time, giving CCFC a famous victory to finish their home season with.
