Rishabh Pant set to lead Delhi after Gambhir's sacking

INDIA BATSMAN Gautam Gambhir has been stripped of captaincy of the Delhi team for the upcoming Vijay Hazare trophy. Surprisingly, the Delhi selectors have chosen promising youngster Rishabh Pant as the man to lead the Delhi side.

During the recent Ranji Trophy season, the wicket-keeper batsman had scored a triple century against Maharashtra and had also hit a quick-fire 48-ball century against Jharkhand. The southpaw also made his debut for India in the third and the final T20 against England early this month.

Although the Delhi team is expected to feature seniors like Ashish Nehra, Unmukt Chand and Gautam Gambhir himself, selectors have shown faith in Pant. The selection committee which comprises Atul Wassan, Nikhil Chopra and Robin Singh believe that Pant has all that it takes to lead a side.

Speaking about the decision Nikhil Chopra told PTI,

"Frankly Vijay Hazare is the last tournament of the season and this was an ideal opportunity for us to see who is the best candidate to lead the state side. We were not finding anyone all these years who could replace Gautam. The Hazare Trophy gives us opportunity to test Rishabh's captaincy skills and with Gautam and other seniors around, he will get ample guidance from Gautam. Obviously Atul (Wassan) has spoken to Gautam and he has been taken into confidence."
