Sehwag recalls how Kumble was destined to pick ‘perfect 10’ at Feroz Shah Kotla

ON FEBRUARY 7, nineteen years ago, former India leggie and present team India head coach Anil Kumble created history by picking 10-wickets in a single innings of a Test match against Pakistan at Feroz Shah Kotla. With that feat, the legendary spinner also became only the second bowler after Jim Laker to produce a perfect 10.

India had set a target of 420 for the visitors, who needed just a draw to win the series. However, Kumble dismissed the opponents with his majestic spell and guided the hosts to its first win against Pakistan in 19 years.

Pakistan, who had built a solid foundation at 101 without losing a wicket, collapsed to 128 for six after Kumble came into attack. While Shahid Afridi was Kumble’s first scalp, he was followed by the likes of Ijaz Ahmed, Inzamam-ul-Haq and Saeed Anwar. Skipper Wasim Akram tried his best to deny Kumble a ‘perfect 10’, only to succumb to his splendid delivery.

Former India opener Virender Sehwag recalled the historic innings and shared a conversation between Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram at the time when Kumble was chasing his tenth wicket of the innings.

According to the image shared by Sehwag on twitter, Waqar was colluding a run-out to deny Kumble his final wicket. However, Akram stated that Kumble cannot be denied his achievement if he is destined to do so. The duo showed resilience with the bat only until Akram edged Kumble’s delivery to VVS Laxman. India won the Test by 212-runs and Kumble achieved the magnificent feat in front of a frenzy Kotla crowd.

Sehwag shared the episode with his fans and stated that ‘all conspiracies against you will fail if you are destined to achieve something’.
