Virat Kohli to be conferred prestigious Padma Shri award
INDIA SKIPPER Virat Kohli is set to be conferred the Padma Shri for his all-round success in the sport of cricket.
Recently, the prolific batsman took over as a captain of the India limited-overs squad and led India to a 2-1 victory in a three-match ODI series. The 28-year-old also steered India to the top spot in the ICC Test rankings in the year 2016.
Kohli, who was awarded the Arjuna Award in recognition of his achievements in international cricket in 2013, is about to add the prestigious Padma Shri to his trophy cabinet. Padma Shri is regarded as the fourth highest civilian award in the country after the Bharat Ratna, the Padma Vibhushan and the Padma Bhushan.
Sources reported that other sportspersons believed to be in the list of awardees are Rio Olympics bronze medallist Sakshi Malik, gymnast Dipa Karmakar, discus thrower Vikas Gowda and hockey maestro PR Sreejesh.
It was earlier believed that veteran wicket-keeper batsman MS Dhoni, Rio Olympics silver medallist PV Sindhu and national badminton coach Pullela Gopichand will also be conferred the prestigious award.
