THE YEAR 2016 was all about PV Sindhu but towards the end of it, we got another champ who did wonders at the international circuit. 22-year-old Sameer Verma reached his first final of a Superseries in Hong Kong.

He was ecstatic about the same while talking to TFG in an exclusive interview.

"It was my first SS final and after defeating Jan O Jorgensen in the semi-finals, I was very confident in the final but Ng Ka Long was really good and difficult to beat. But very happy in the way I performed."

On beating Jorgensen in the semis, he said,

"After my quarter-final match when I learnt that he is my opponent, I was ready to face him. Yes had the realisation that he is a top shuttler but was only concentrating on giving my best and in the end I  did, so was very happy about it."

Talking about the final against Ng Ka he said,

"I had already defeated Ng Ka Long before in the junior circuit and that to twice but on that day he was the better shuttler on court. He had a better strategy.  I did well in the second game but it was too late."

His immediate tournaments include the Syed Modi, Thailand Grand Prix Gold, All England and the Swiss Open.

When asked who were his inspirations, he was quick to respond,

"Inspirations are many, Carolina Marin, Saina, Sindhu, Srikanth, Viktor Axelsen, all these are of the similar age and fall in the top rankings list."

Further talking about him sharing the same dressing room with Marin, he said,

"It's very inspiring. I'm following her, the way she plays, closely looking at the different things she does. How she behaves on the court and off it, all small little things."

He signs off by saying that he hopes his team Hyderabad wins the league and then celebrate.
