11 point scoring system will draw more eyeballs towards PBL, says Prakash Padukone

INDIAN GREAT Prakash Padukone has reckoned that the new scoring system to be introduced in the Premier Badminton League (PBL) will be an exciting experiment. Padukone believes that the 11-point scoring system adds more uncertainty to the matches, which he feels will draw more spectators to the court.

As reported by PTI, Padukone, who is the first Indian to win the All England Championship title, explained,

“It will be an exciting experiment. In the 11-point scoring system, anybody can win the match. There will be a lot of uncertainty, which will bring more spectators to the stadium and more viewership.”

Padukone’s comments have come in the backdrop of Indian shuttlers Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu welcoming the shorter version of the scoring system. Padukone feels that such a change in the sport makes it interesting for the TV viewers.

“I think some kind of innovation and change is required for television viewers to make the sport interesting. So, I think in some ways it is good.”

The 61 year old added that as the new system doesn’t affect the super series or the other tournaments, it is definitely worth experimenting in PBL.

“As long as it doesn’t affect or become a norm for super series and all that, but I don’t think they (Badminton World Federation) are planning to do that at this stage, but at this moment, it is definitely worth experimenting.”

The third edition of the PBL is set to get underway on January 1, 2017.
