Shiva, Manoj wins golds; Devendro takes home silver at boxing Nationals

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS bronze medallist Shiva Thapa and former Commonwealth Games gold medallist Manoj Kumar clinched the gold medal but Asian silver-medallist L Devendro Singh suffered a heartbreak and had to be contended with a silver at the Senior Men's National Boxing Championships.

Two-time Olympian and local favourite Shiva, who had injured his forehead during the quarterfinal bout, outpunched Ankush Dahiya 5-0 in the lightweight (60kg) division. Two-time bronze medallist at Asian Championships, Manoj, who is representing Railway Sports Promotion Board, defeated Duryodhan Singh of Services Sports Control Board 4-1 in the welter (69kg) weight final bout.

In fly (52kg) weight, L Devendro Singh could not get past Chandigarh's Deepak Singh, who was unanimously adjudged the winner after the final clash.The Manipuri boxer, who was making a comeback after a long gap, later blamed his fitness for the loss.

Overall, Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) produced the best results as they won four golds, one silver and three bronze medals. The Railways Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) bagged two gold, two silver and two bronze medals to finish second. 

In light fly weight, Haryana boxer Amit emerged victories with a split decision of 4-1 over Shayam Kumar, who was representing RSPB. 

In bantam (56kg) division, SSCB's Md Hussamuddin outclassed Haryana's Akshay 5-0 to bag the gold medal.

In light welter (64kg) category, SSCB's Thomas Meitei notched up a 3-2 win over RSPB's Rohit in a split decision to take the gold medal, while SSCB's Jaideep defeated Venhlimpuia of Mizoram 5-0 in middle (75kg) weight division.
 
RSPB boxer Manish Panwar also bagged the gold in the light heavy (81kg) weight category after defeating Rahul of Madhya Pradesh 3-2 in another split decision.
 
In heavy (91kg) weight, Madhya Pradesh boxer Gaurav was adjudged the winner over Virender Kumar of Himachal Pradesh in an unanimous decision.

In super heavy (+91kg) category, Satish Kumar of SSCB won the gold medal after beating Parveen Kumar of Haryana in another unanimous decision.

Deepak Singh from Chandigarh was adjudged the Best Boxer.

On the sidelines of Boxing Nationals, the Boxing Federation of India conducted an election today to elect a player repersentative to the Executive Committee of BFI. 27 votes were casted by the 27 teams present at the nationals and former Commonwealth Gold medalist Manoj Kumar was elected the Player representative by an overwhelming response of vote casters.
