ISL   /   Mumbai City   /   NorthEast United   /

A delighted Guimaraes said their performance was great, Vingada believes his was the better side irrespective of the result

NORTHEAST UNITED FC UNDER COACH VINGADA were on a hat trick of wins in the latest season of ISL. But Mumbai had other plans. Having scored through a Diego Forlan penalty finished it 1-0 in style.

After the match the Coach of the winning side, spoke to the press.

“I think that speaks really well of our performance because as you play more matches you get more wins. For them, it was the third game while it was the second for us. It was the first time here that we practised in our home. We had to be patient, it was that kind of game. We took our chance and then we defended like lions."

On their first loss of the season, NEUFC coach Vingada was not willing take the result to the heart and positively said.

“Today was a very hard and intense game especially for us as it was our third game in six days. To be honest, I was expecting more difficulties for our side. I must congratulate Mumbai City FC because they won. One mistake was we gave Mumbai City FC the penalty in a very easy situation. Of all the other things, I believe that we are building a good team with very good organisation.”

Mumbai are now in the same situation as NorthEast were after two games; taking maximum 6 points. They must continue playing with the same mentality in order to keep this momentum going believed Guimaraes and added,

“Two games, two victories, it is like a very good start…We believe in the work we did in the pre- season and are doing currently, so these results are just a reflection on our hard work. But if the players do not believe in themselves, then you cannot achieve. My players are showing good character and determination to win. Sometimes we play good, sometimes we play bad but this fighting spirit always makes you achieve something.”

Vingada with the disappointment of a result was not at all disheartened by the effort his side put in. He affirmed that he felt pride in seeing them perform and went on to say

"I am proud of the players even though we made some mistakes, missed a couple of chances… But this is football, these mistakes happen because we play with men and not with robots and machines. I am leaving with this performance and not the result. I am leaving Mumbai more optimistic than I was even before we lost.”

On his marquee Forlan, Guimaraes said he was working with team to move the ball well when in possession and his contributions in both goals in the two games has been significant.

“Again I think he played a very good game, other players also tried to find him much more and that is normal as he plays more, everybody will know his movements better and he has played two games and has an assist and a goal,” Guimaraes said.

Vingada's thoughts of the penalty that changed the course of the game were

"It was an easy situation. We had a couple of chances to control and clear the danger, but when the ball got to Reagan he fell down and we conceded the penalty. However, I’ve seen this in bigger teams as well, players make the same mistake. We can make many mistakes but usually such mistakes do not happen in my team, because the players know that when they are playing under pressure they must clear the area as soon possible. So of course there were 2-3 mistakes that led to the penalty. Also our goalkeeper almost saved the penalty. But this is football and hence it is the No.1 sport in the world.”

Mumbai City Coach Guimaraes about the number of fans in the stadium not being to their full capacity commented,

“The support was okay and I think also because of the holidays you have here . I understand the situation but I hope in the next game we will have more fans coming in to support the players and have a fully packed stadium.”

The truely positive minded Vingada said he is sure that his team are doing the right things in the right direction.

“Each one has their own opinion. Honestly if you see we created better opportunities to score. Honestly I feel we were better. However, this is not important. We didn’t score and Mumbai City FC won. So as per the result it was Mumbai City FC as the better team… But I think if we play well like we played today we can win and get more points. I believe playing this way, we are going in the right direction.” he concluded.
