PV Sindhu enters round two while men's losing run continues at Singapore SS

WOMEN'S SINGLES shuttler PV Sindhu won a match that she almost lost defeating an old foe Busanan from Thailand to enter round two of Singapore Open Super Series. After being one game down, Sindhu regained her confidence and the momentum that helped her win the next two games and the match, 9-21, 21-17, 21-11. The Indian next faces Chinese shuttler He Bingjiao and the head-to-head count favours the Chinese, 2-1.

It was also a good day for the recently crowned men's doubles national champions duo of Akshay Dewalkar and Pranaav Jerry Chopra. The Indian pair defeated Liu Cheng/Lu Kai from China in a thrilling encounter of three games, 17-21, 16-21, 22-20. They next meet second seeds Indonesian pair Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan in round two.

Meanwhile, the dismal performance from the men's singles shuttlers continues as they exit in the first round. Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy put a fight till the last minute but couldn't hold onto their lead and succumbed to defeat. Meanwhile, Ajay Jayaram once again fell prey to German Marc Zwiebler.

Prannoy had a tough outing as he was up against No. 1 seed Cheng Long but the Indian put up a good fight to extend the match to three games. Finally, the Chinese emerged victorious 21-18, 18-21,19-21. Srikanth too faced a similar situation. After having won the first game 21-11 against Hsu Jen Hao of Taipei, the Indian lacked the momentum and therefore lost the next two games 18-21, 18-21.

Ajay failed to put up a fight and was dumped in straight games 17-21, 16-21.

It was the end of campaign for women's and mixed doubles shuttlers Jwala Gutta/Ashwini Ponnappa and Aparna Balan/Arun Vishnu. Jwala/Ashwini lost to Korean pair Go Ah Ra/Yoo Hae Won 18-21, 16-21 while Arun/Aparna were ousted by Korean duo Shin Baek Cheol/Chae Yoo Jung 11-21, 17-21.

On the other hand, Pranaav/Sikki Reddy defeated Irfan Fadhilah/Weni Anggraini of Indonesia 21-15, 21-17 to set up a clash against fourth seeds Xu Chen/Ma Jin of China in round two.
