Badminton ace Saina Nehwal receives Padma Bhushan award from the president

INDIA'S BADMINTON STALWART and top shuttler, Saina Nehwal received Padma Bhushan award from the president today in the capital.

Saina will now be seen at the India Super Series as the defending champion. She is seeded second and the tournament begins tomorrow in Delhi.

"It's a great moment, a proud moment. I am very very happy. My parents are very happy," she said to PTI.

She further added that she hopes "to continue to make India proud."

The award was announced on the eve of the Republic Day and the ceremony took place today. President Pranab Mukherjee presented five Padma Vibhushan, eight Padma Bhushan and 43 Padma Sri awards at the function.

The others who received the third highest civilian award along with Saina were Hafeez Sorabe Contractor, Barjinder Singh Hamdard, Anupam Pushkarnath Kher, Pallonji Shapoorji Mistry, Saina Nehwal, Vinod Rai, Alla Ventaka Rama Rao and Duvvur Nageshwar Reddy.

Tennis star Sania Mirza and a few other awardees will be given the honour at a separate function which will be held next month.
