Myneni beats Bega in the ATP Delhi challengers opener; Sanam ousted

WORLD NO.166 Saketh Myneni has kicked-off his ATP Delhi challengers in style by beating World no. 317 Alessandro Bega 6-3, 6-2 in the opening round today.

The Indian got off to a quick start by breaking the Italian early in the first set and raced to a 4-1 lead. Thereafter, Myneni held serve without much fuss to close out the set. In the second set too, Myneni broke Bega early to have a firm grip on the match.

In the end, India’s second best singles player nailed the set and the match in exactly an hour’s time.
Myneni will play his next match on Wednesday against Zhe Li of China.

Meanwhile, Saketh’s doubles partner Sanam Singh couldn’t progress ahead into the tournament after he withdrew from his opening round against Stephane Robert of France.

The Indian was ahead in the first set against the Frenchman but couldn’t hang on to his lead. In the end, Robert grabbed the hard-fought opening set 6-4. In the second set, after one game only, Sanam retired from the match and exited the singles draw.

Both Saketh and Sanam will play their doubles match tomorrow.
