Odisha's Kalinga Stadium gets high performance centres for gymnastics, hockey

THE KALINGA STADIUM of Bhubaneswar, one of the sports hotspots in Odisha, has got two high performance centres for gymnastics and hockey on top of its existing multi-sport infrastructure.

The complex is home to world class football, athletics, hockey and swimming arenas. It also houses sports hostels and training facilities for athletics. Now, the gymnastics centres will make it one of the most diverse sports complexes in India.

The facilities were inaugurated by Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik.

On this occasion the chief minister also presented a cheque of Rs 10 lakh to Odia gymnasts Rakesh Patra and Tapan Mohanty for qualifying for the upcoming Asian Games 2023.

Speaking at the inauguration event, he said, “Odisha follows a partnership model for sporting excellence. With the inauguration of the new Hockey High Performance Centre and the Gymnastic High Performance Centre, Odisha’s sporting ecosystem has becomes even more robust, enhancing athletes’ abilities to compete and shine in both national and international competitions. These new centres will play a pivotal role in discovering untapped talents and nurturing potential medal-winning athletes.”

The sports complex has held the Hockey World Cup, FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, and other tournaments of global repute. With its infrastructure only growing with time, more such events are bound to be hosted in its premises.
