The Board of Control for cricket in India BCCI has terminated the whole selection panel, including chief selector Chetan Sharma and other members of the selection committee, Sunil Joshi, Harvinder Singh and Debashish Mohanty.
The main reason behind this action might be attributed the dreadful exit of team India from the T20 World Cup and the recently concluded Asia Cup, but the problem extends far beyond that. Under this selection committee India have not been able to win any ICC tournaments. India also failed to go past the group stage of the 2021 World Cup after losing in their first match against Pakistan.
This selection panel was also facing a lot of criticism from every nook and corner, media, fans as well as the cricket experts for their decisions, approach and shortcomings of the erstwhile Selection Committee. The Committee ended upmaking 8 captains within a time line of 18 months, distributing captaincy like sweets, without realising that such a crucial position cannot be taken so casually.
Changing captains regularly creates confusion in the team and hampers the performance. A well-adjusted and competent captain brings consistency in the performance of the team and helps him in selecting a team that has a perfect blend of experience and youth. To a large extent the short tenure of the serving captains could not create a unity and growth in players as a team. Now let’s talk about the new Selection Committee which is going to be constituted soon. The first challenge that they will face is to identify players with an inherent aggressive approach towards the game and to appoint a new all format captain preferably a player who is young and age is on his side.
The policy of resting players frequently should be stopped immediately as this hampers a player's rhythm because a player needs to play consistently in order to give performances. Besides all this, performances in domestic cricket should be given priority. Workload management needs to stop and this policy of resting players in the name of workload management is not working for the Indian team.
The Board of Control has also declared the date of application for the candidates who want to apply for post’s in the newly constituted selection panel of the BCCI. They have kept satin conditions for the Candidates who want to apply for the posts in the panel. The candidates should have played at least 7 test matches, 10 One day matches, 20 to 30 first class matches and retired from cricket 5 years earlier. These are the conditions that every candidate will have to fulfil if he wants to be selected in the selection panel by the cricket Advisory Committee of the BCCI .
