SPL 2022: Shillong Lajong beaten by Mawlai as match interrupted by rain-thunderstorm finally concludes (UPDATED)

SHILLONG LAJONG'S SECOND OUTING in Shillong Premier League 2022, which was originally washed out due to heavy rain and lightnings, finally concluded on 1st July with Mawlai SC ensuring a 1-0 victory over the defending champions.

The match, being held at the MFA Turf in Polo Grounds, Shillong, was in its 63rd minutes when an all-day overcast sky opened up and several lightnings were heard. The referee did not want to risk the players being out in such conditions, not to mention the hundreds of supporters who had assembled at the ground despite the weather.

After the game was paused for a while, a decision was taken to abandon the match.

At the time, Mawlai SC were leading 1-0, building on their good form from the opening day. Shillong Lajong, whose young squad lost their first round game to Langsning FC, were struggling to hit their stride and convert their chances.

But it was Mawlai who got the breakthrough half an hour into the match when Donbor Nongkynrih let fly a long ranger from near the halfline and its awkward bounce caught the Lajong defenders and the goalkeeper off guard. The ball found the net, to the delight of the fans of the East Khasi Hills-based club.

UPDATE: After the match was interrupted, the Shillong Sports Association decided to play out the remainder of the match on 1st July 2022. The game retained the scoreline 1-0 as it resumed, and for the rest of the match, no further goals occurred, ensuring the victory for Mawlai SC.
