THE FIBA ASIA CUP 2021 has seen further postponement due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Scheduled to be held this month in Jakarta, Indonesia, the continental championship will now be held in July 2022 at the same venue.
India, who were scheduled to play their final round of qualifier matches in Jakarta days before the main tournament was supposed to start, have a new date and new venue for those games.
Jeddah, Saudi Arabia will host the group B of second round of qualifiers, where India, Palestine and Saudi Arabia are participating. The top two teams in the group will make it to the Asia Cup.
The new fixtures of the qualifying group are as follows:
20th August - India vs Saudi Arabia
21st August - India vs Palestine
22nd August - Palestine vs Saudi Arabia
Previously, India finished third in the Group D of the first round of qualifiers, thanks to two wins over Iraq. They missed out on a direct qualification to Asia Cup but earned their passage into the next round of qualifiers. India's forward Muin Bek Hafeez played a crucial role in securing both these wins. India also had a good game against Bahrain, where they lost by just one point.
Last time India qualified for the FIBA Asia Cup in 2017, where they were eliminated from the group stage without a single victory. In 2019, they failed to qualify. This time, however, they are within touching distance of being in the continental championship again.
