ISL 2021 -- FC Goa beat Jamshedpur to re-enter top four

Jorge Ortiz Mendoza scored a brace as FC Goa registered a 3-0 win over Jamshedpur FC in Match 58 of Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) 2020-21 at the Fatorda Stadium on Thursday. The Gaurs were also helped by some brave goalkeeping from Naveen Kumar, who was brought in to replace Mohammad Nawaz.

Jamshedpur’s Isaac Vanmalsawma was denied almost 11 minutes into the game after the winger teed up a shot from outside the box and an outstretched Naveen, making his first appearance of the season, denied him with a beautiful save. The Gaurs themselves came close to scoring in the 16th minute but this time TP Rehenesh denied Ortiz.

Rehenesh, however, could not prevent Ortiz three minutes later. Brandon Fernandes created the chance as he played the ball to Alberto Noguera in the box. The Spanish midfielder was sharp enough to find his countryman Ortiz, who ensured that the ball found the bottom left corner of the net.

Chances were few and far between for Jamshedpur as they worked hard for the equaliser. Nerijus Valskis forced Naveen into making a save at point-blank range in the 25th minute after Alexandre Lima floated in a low cross to the striker. In the 37th minute, defender Stephen Eze misdirected his header from an Aitor Monroy freekick as the Gaurs maintained their slender lead at halftime.

FC Goa struck early in the second half to double their lead over Jamshedpur in the 52nd minute. Once again it was Ortiz on the scoresheet who finished a brilliant move which began when Noguera found Brandon on the left, who squared a pass into Goa’s attacking third for Ortiz to score.

Ortiz came close to scoring a hattrick for the Gaurs in the 56th minute after Brandon passed the ball to the Spaniard but his effort was saved by the Jamshedpur custodian. Ortiz was denied by Rehenesh yet again in the 74th minute after his shot was pushed over the crossbar by the Indian shot-stopper.

Gaurs custodian Naveen was at his best yet again in the 78th minute. He made an important save to deny substitute Jackichand Singh. The goalkeeper pulled off another save after Eze headed the following corner on goal. In the 85th minute, Naveen palmed away a lobbed cross from Valskis and the follow-up from William Lalnunfela was headed off the goal-line by Goa defender James Donachie.

Ivan Gonzalez sealed the victory in the 89th minute for the Gaurs. The defender made a dash from Goa’s defensive third into their attacking third and after a one-two with Noguera slotted the ball into the net to secure the three points for FC Goa. This 3-0 victory moves FC Goa above Hyderabad FC into third spot, while Jamshedpur slipped to seventh on the league table.
