ISL 2020 -- Jamshedpur FC hold Mumbai City with ten men

Jamshedpur FC halted Mumbai City FC’s winning run in Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) 2020-21 after a 1-1 draw between the teams at the GMC Stadium in Bambolim on Monday. Nerijus Valskis scored the game’s opening goal inside 10 minutes, while Bartholomew Ogbeche levelled the score for Mumbai in the 15th minute. Jamshedpur’s midfielder Aitor Monroy was then sent off before the half hour mark, but Mumbai couldn’t make the extra man count as the teams shared the spoils.

The Islanders made a bright start to the game with Ogbeche producing a shot at goal from inside the box in the first minute. His shot though was blocked by Jamshedpur players and Mumbai were soon in for a shock in the 9th minute after conceding possession deep in their own half.

Jackichand Singh received the ball near Mumbai’s penalty area and drove into the box before crossing it for Valskis, who was characteristically clinical and slotted his attempt into the net confidently to give Jamshedpur a 1-0 lead.

Monroy came close to doubling Jamshedpur’s lead four minutes later but his direct freekick from a dangerous area went fractions wide of goal. Mumbai responded by going up the other end and scoring the equaliser through Ogbeche in the 15th minute. The former Nigerian international made amends for his miss in the first minute by opening up his body in the box to slot a square ball by Bipin Singh into the net.

Both sides weren’t holding anything back as they looked to score another goal, making for an end-to-end contest. However, the momentum swung heavily in Mumbai’s favour in the 28th minute when Monroy received his marching orders following a second yellow card.

The Islanders looked to press home their man advantage and created a few half chances to go ahead before the break, while Jamshedpur looked threatening whenever near Mumbai’s box as Jackichand showed with a powerful shot in the 41st minute that required goalkeeper Amrinder Singh’s intervention.

Ogbeche also forced Jamshedpur’s goalkeeper TP Rehenesh into making a sharp save on the brink of halftime but neither team managed to get another goal as the sides went into the break with the score all square at 1-1.

The first chance of the second period also went to Ogbeche, who couldn’t quite direct a Bipin cross from the left on target. Mumbai had another golden opportunity to go ahead just after the hour mark when a loose ball from a corner fell invitingly for Rowllin Borges. Unfortunately for the Islanders, Borges’ attempt from a few yards out went over the crossbar much to the relief of the Jamshedpur players.

Mumbai continued to pile the pressure on Jamshedpur’s defence as the half wore on, but Owen Coyle’s men were holding firm and denying the Islanders time and space on the ball. Jamshedpur also looked threatening in attack and had the ball in the net through Valskis in the 79th minute. Fortunately for Mumbai, the Lithuanian’s strike was ruled out by the linesman for being offside.

The 83rd minute then witnessed Rehenesh pull off a stunning save. It was an Ahmed Jahouh volley from near the edge of the box that seemed destined for the back of the net but for Rehenesh, who dived at full stretch to deny Mumbai a winner.

Ogbeche had another huge chance to give Mumbai the win in injury time after a delightful cross from the right found him unmarked for a free header in the box. However, his header was wide of the target to the disappointment of Mumbai as both teams had to settle for a point.
