ISL 2020 -- Jamshedpur FC hold 10 man SC East Bengal to a draw

SC East Bengal picked up their first points in Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) 2020-21 after a 0-0 draw with Jamshedpur FC at the Tilak Maidan Stadium in Vasco on Thursday. While neither side managed to get on the scoresheet, there was a fair bit of drama in the game with SC East Bengal’s Eugeneson Lyngdoh being sent off in the 25th minute and Jamshedpur’s Laldinliana Renthlei seeing red in the dying moments of the second half.

Jamshedpur began positively and had a big chance to go in front in the 6th minute when a delightful ball by Mohammad Mobashir had put Aniket Jadhav through on goal. Unfortunately for Jamshedpur, Aniket couldn’t quite apply the finishing touch and ended up blazing his shot over the crossbar.

Owen Coyle’s men dominated the ball as the half wore on but weren’t creating too many chances. However, SC East Bengal handed Jamshedpur the initiative in the 25th minute when Lyngdoh was sent off for a second yellow card after a tackle on Alexandre Lima.

Jamshedpur almost went in front four minutes later after Nerijus Valskis volleyed a cross from the right just wide of the target. They were also inches away from taking the lead in the 38th minute when a Stephen Eze header from a corner rattled the woodwork.

Valskis then tested SC East Bengal’s goalkeeper with an effort on target three minutes later but the Lithuanian striker’s header off a cross from the right was saved as both teams went in for the halftime interval without breaking the deadlock.

The second half witnessed Jamshedpur applying the pressure on SC East Bengal’s defence from the get-go, but the Kolkata club did well to deny the opposition attackers time and space on the ball. As a result, Coyle’s men found it difficult to create any clear-cut opportunities to score from.

Lima, though, was fractions away from giving Jamshedpur the lead in the 69th minute when his powerful effort from the edge of the penalty area struck the crossbar. Despite seeing very little of the ball, SC East Bengal worked tirelessly and did well to keep the match goalless heading into the final five minutes of normal time.

Eze had a chance to score a winner from a corner in the 88th minute but his header wasn’t clean and ballooned over the goal. Jamshedpur also lost their man advantage in second half injury time after Laldinliana received his marching orders for a second yellow card. In the end, neither team could create an opening for a good chance at goal in the closing stages as both sides had to share the spoils.
