I-League 2020 -- Former Gokulam Kerala FC coach Fernando Varela joins Churchill Brothers
CHURCHILL BROTHERS HAVE signed Fernando Santiago Varela as their new head coach.
The Argentina-born UEFA Pro License holder was the head coach of Gokulam Kerala FC till last season, where he helped them grow into one of the best sides in the I-League and win their first major trophy, the Durand Cup 2019.

The former Tecnofutbol coach's appointment is part of Churchill Brothers' push to regain their prominence in the I-League this season, which is now experiencing a tough fight between contenders, with champions Mohun Bagan joining the Indian Super League from 2020-21. Their arch rivals and another title contender in I-League, East Bengal, have also bid for a move to the ISL and are likely to do successfully complete the process in the coming weeks.
Varela joined GKFC at an early stage when they were struggling as one of the new clubs in I-League and by the time he left they had risen to be one of the top sides, but when he left the club in June multiple reports spoke of his displeasure with the club's management.
It remains to be seen whether he can top his GKFC performance at his new club.
